Here’s a practical solution to the abortion issue, but first, let’s stipulate:
Stipulation
1: Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies can lead to abortion. This
solution is only applicable to the run of the mill bone-and-baby
scenario – there are others that require a different solution.
Stipulation 2: Contraception in all forms is freely available. Cheap and easy, and we’re not talking about the guy or gal.
Stipulation
3: The Church-lady is not standing at the pharmacy counter tisking at
people who are being responsible by not producing unwanted pregnancies,
and the pharmacist cannot refuse to do his job.
Stipulation 4: The persons are legally consenting.
Stipulation 5: This solution does not require metaphysics.
There
are always two people involved in the creation of a human – a man and a
woman. If these two have not used freely available contraception and
had unprotected sex, and a pregnancy has occurred as a result of their
behavior, they are both equally responsible for the outcome.
This
means that these two people are going to be expected to provide the
basic requirements of the new human until it can provide for itself –
food, shelter, education and healthcare until age 18.
The
male is 50% responsible, and the non-male is 50% responsible. Should
either be unwilling to shoulder that responsibility, either physically
or monetarily, it can become a civil matter where they can be compelled
to do so.
Private organizations (including adoption,
daycare, counseling, job training and education, medical care and
housing) can be donated to by well meaning patrons to provide material
support if none is otherwise available (and remember, the lovers are
expected to go in halvies and can be sued if they don’t cough up).
No
shame required, no tax dollars needed. Everyone is going to be OK, and
no one gets off the hook. It’s safe, practical, ethical and moral, and
paid for by BOTH persons involved.
Now, we’ve solved that, and there are no such things as abortion clinics. If only everyone would.
